I Love My Studio...

So, I posted this scarf on Etsy on Tuesday:

And somebody bought it last night! That was fast. So, it's heading off to it's new home. While at the studio, I re-did some of the photos I took earlier this week...

And for some reason, I just really love this picture. Not even sure if it's a really good photo of the scarf for selling, per se, I just really like the little bit of the view of the frozen canal outside my studio window...

(This scarf is from the same warp as the one that sold, but the weft is grey instead of icy blue. Both are a turned Ms and Os structure, using Silk City's Bambu7 sett at 16 epi, using various shades of blue and gray and a bit of black to outline the cells.)

I love my studio on weekday mornings. When I scoot over there before 9am, I'm often the only person on my floor, and it's very peaceful, and it's nice to see the artists that work there on a daily basis making their way in, too. I really am looking forward to when Conall is old enough to go to preschool a couple mornings a week, so I can spend more daylight hours in my space - does that make me a terrible, terrible mother? :)

What a beautiful scarf! :)

It makes you a wonderful mother, because you are teaching him, by example - the method that works best!, what it means to have a passion and the importance of dedicating yourself to growing and improving in that passion. That's a true gift! :)

I think it is wonderful that you have a studio to work in. And I totally agree with Gwen. I also feel your kids will also grow to appreciate the great amount of work that you do to produce such beautiful and special handwoven objects.

Hey, guys, thanks for the encouragement! I really need to go see "Who Does She Think She Is" this weekend and post about it (documentary about women artists). Nice to know that maybe I'm not completely warping my kids. (Har) (A little - VERY little - weaving humor there.)(I am so in a goofy mood today, must be the new box of Irish Breakfast tea or something...)

Congrats on the sale!!! :) You are certainly not a bad mom for wanting more weave time. I called Jeremiah's school and found out that he fell short of Pre-k by a matter of days!!! I give my husband the 'I really want to weave puppy dog eyes' but, usually have to wait until they are both tucked in bed. :) I yearn for more hours at the loom too;)

No big suprise that the scarf sold pronto -- it's stunning!

Childhood flies by, trust me on this one -- my children are now 34 and 21. Enjoy as much time with C. as you can -- preschool will arrive before you know it, and your studio will still be there when it does. :)

It's hard to balance parenting with work, and especially so for artists, as those creative flashes often don't align with regular clock hours.

Your son will learn from your example that both he, and your work are important. Not to mention, soon he'll be old enough to start using small looms, and learning other artistic things along the way.

So for now, keep up the great juggling routine -- you'll always have weaving time, but you won't always have toddler time.

From one who's been there, and now is through the looking glass and on the other side. . . :)

You are an awesome mother by realizing that you need to keep your identity through the difficult child raising years. It's very easy to get lost in the daily business.
Besides what ever would you do with all that creative energy?
